  • Originally Sotogrande was conceived as one of the most exclusive residential resorts in Europe. Founded in 1962 by entrepreneur Joseph McMicking, of British ancestry, it soon became a meeting point for business leaders, artists, world famous personalities and members of royalty, thanks to its extraordinary natural setting on the shores of the Mediterranean, its wide sandy beaches and an urban infrastructure designed for high quality residential tourism.

Located in the municipality of San Roque, next to Gibraltar, Sotogrande has a permanent population of about 2,600 inhabitants, rising to over 12,000 in summer. It enjoys a warm climate throughout the year, which has contributed to the creation of a high quality hotel infrastructure to cover the demands of exclusive tourism from all nationalities. Sotogrande also enjoys a wide variety of facilities and shopping centres, spread across the town, such as the marina, Sotomarket shopping centre, and Paniagua, Plaza Balanca, or Sotovila Mar y Sol shopping centres.

Central to Sotogrande's social life is the impressive marina with nearly 1,400 berths, some with private access to the adjoining properties and a special design of canals imitating a "little Venice". Santa María Polo Club, one of the top three in Europe where the Silver Cup and Gold Cup tournaments are hold annually, has capacity for up to 800 players and 2,500 horses. It has world renowned golf courses such as Valderrama, best known for hosting the Ryder Cup '97 and Volvo European Masters, or the Alcaidesa Golf Club, the only links-style course on the Mediterranean, with stunning views to the sea, Gibraltar and Africa that captivate visitors. Other sporting facilities include two tennis and paddle tennis clubs, a rugby club, sailing club and equestrian centres.

An important point to bear in mind for those considering Sotogrande as their future destination, is the big investment made by the proprietors of the Zagaleta group in Benahavis; private resorts where one can find the most expensive mansions in Spain, and even in Europe.

For all these reasons Sotogrande has undoubtedly become a benchmark for those looking for a holiday destination synonymous with quality and tranquility, far away from mass tourism, in a natural area opposite the African coast.
